This project is worth 10 points of extra credit (equivalent to one quiz).
Choose ONE of the following options:
OPTION 1: Make up a solar system object and make a poster or PowerPoint about it. Give it a name, draw a picture of it, tell me about it. It must be one of these:
Planet
Moon
Dwarf planet
Centaur
Trojan
Asteroid
You must include an explanation about WHY it is that type of object.
OPTION 2: Pretend you are organizing a rally to protest the IAU’s decision to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet. Make a poster, PowerPoint, or video to advertise your rally and explain what it’s about. The following must be included:
Why you think Pluto should still be a planet
Whether or not you also think the other dwarf planets should also be considered planets
Pictures, charts, and/or graphic organizers
OPTION 3: Come up with your own idea about what the definition of a planet should be. Make a proposal to the IAU, in essay form, explaining your idea. Include the following:
A list of the requirements that you think a planet should have
A graphic organizer showing how the objects in the solar system would be classified under your model (i.e., show which objects would be planets, which, if any, would be dwarf planets, etc.)
An explanation of why your way of classifying planets is better than the current model
A note about videos: If you choose to make a video, keep in mind that you can’t attach very large files to webmails. If you do this, you may need to upload it somewhere else (like Youtube or Google Drive) and send me a link to it.
Semester 2 - Water Filtration
This project is worth 10 points (equivalent to one quiz).
Keep in mind you don't necessarily have to have all the materials the video calls for (the aeration pump for example is not necessary). Basically what you'll need is dirty water and a few different things to try using to filter out the gunk in the water (cotton balls, sand, coffee filters, etc).
Use three different methods of filtration to filter out the same batch of dirt water—it needs to be the same batch to make sure all 3 filters are tested equally. Determine which filter worked the best.
Take pictures of all three methods, and the water before and after putting it through the filters.
Webmail me your pictures along with a description of what you used for filters and the results of your experiment.
